When you want more publicity, you must understand the rules which govern the industry as a whole. Over my years of work, these 10 “commandments” have guided who gets publicity and who doesn’t.

1. Thou Shalt Lead with Kindness

Kindness is your ultimate business and media strength. Kindness fosters connection, trust, and long-term relationships. Kindness is loyalty that no marketing budget can buy.

2. Thou Shalt Always Be Visible

"If they don’t know you exist, they can’t do business with you." Visibility is about proactive, strategic exposure. Publicity is never a one-time event.

3. Thou Shalt Network Generously

I’m not just talking about a business card collection. Build authentic relationships with everyone you encounter in your business. "Generosity is the soul of networking."

4. Thou Shalt Be the Message

Public relations is still human relations. Every touchpoint - your voicemail, email signature, social posts, and even how you enter a room communicates your brand. Your behavior is your publicity.

5. Thou Shalt Speak in Sound Bites

The media loves brevity. Sound bites are what get you booked on interviews and quoted in articles. When it’s memorable to you, it’s memorable to your audience.

6. Thou Shalt Build Relationships Before Sales

Relationships are the real currency of success. You’ve heard a million times that people do business with those they know, like, and trust. This means it’s always about connection over conversion.

7. Thou Shalt Own Your Expertise

You don’t need to be the world’s leading authority but you DO need to be a trusted voice in your niche. Credibility comes from showing up, sharing insights, and offering value. Expertise only grows through exposure.

8. Thou Shalt Follow Up Religiously

"The fortune is in the follow-up." After a media appearance, a networking event, or a casual intro, follow up promptly and personally. Stay top of mind.

9. Thou Shalt Embrace Your Uniqueness

Your story is your power. Authenticity attracts attention. Don’t hide what makes you different, instead embrace and highlight it. Whether it’s your background, perspective, or journey, your uniqueness is your brand.

10. Thou Shalt Create a Ripple Effect

Kindness multiplies. Your publicity can be a platform for purpose. Use your visibility to support causes, uplift others, and inspire action. When you lead with heart, you become a force for good which is the most powerful publicity of all.
