“Make Your Mark” exhibition commemorates MarinMOCA’s 35th anniversary

Opening reception on Saturday, June 16 from 5pm - 7pm
Exhibit Dates: June 16 - July 29, 2018

NOVATO, CA (May 2018) On June 16, 2018, MarinMOCA opens “Make Your Mark,” an exhibition of work by artists who explore making marks in unique ways. The exhibit commemorates  MarinMOCA’s 35th year of bringing contemporary art to the North Bay. “Make Your Mark” also continues our series of National Juried exhibits that give artists from across the country the opportunity to show their work in a professional museum setting while giving visitors the opportunity to see artworks by American artists. “Make Your Mark” was juried by Jen Tough of Jen Tough Gallery in Benicia, CA. The exhibit features 45 artists who put down marks using a variety of media to create abstract or representational imagery.

Mixed-media artist Bibby Gignilliot creates thick and thin marks using paint and cut paper shapes, as seen in her piece “Mod Squad” above. She creates engaging space-filled compositions with the use of line and color.

Through an expressive wash of white paint over a colorful background, coupled with graphic black outlines, Forrest Kirk reveals startling imagery in “Fast Food.” Figures and objects sit solidly on the canvas, alongside bold, amorphous shapes that straddle the line between abstract and recognizable. From delicate ink drawings to bold and expressive painting, we invite the public to experience this outstanding exhibit of mark-making by national artists.

MarinMOCA Marks 35 Years of Contemporary Art
During 2018, the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art celebrates its 35th year. Visitors today might marvel at the museum’s stately stucco building or be inspired by the exhibitions on view. These, however, are only the latest manifestations of an institution marking a milestone anniversary, a unique organization founded by eleven artists in 1983.

The founding artists were students of art professor Kent Rupp at the Indian Valley campus of College of Marin. Artist Ron Vela explains “There was a strong social component in the early days. We all wanted to continue painting and get better, and for people to see our work.” Little did they know that their collaboration would span over three decades and survive three name changes as their mission to connect the public with contemporary art was realized. Founded as Indian Valley Artists in 1983, the organization was greatly helped in the mid-90’s by current Novato Council Member Pat Eklund who, as Novato’s Planning Commissioner, suggested they move into the historic Officers’ Headquarters Building at 500 Palm Drive in Hamilton. The City of Novato ultimately granted the artists leases for several buildings in the complex. In 2007, the organization was rebranded as the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art, and further developed  its reputation as a premier venue for high-quality contemporary art exhibitions.

MarinMOCA presents contemporary art exhibitions and educational programs. We collaborate with local organizations such as Alchemia (Serving adults with disabilities) and TeamWorks (Serving at-risk youth). In 2018 we launched the  4th grade art enrichment program with the Novato public schools. During the next 35 years, MarinMOCA will continue to “make its mark,” in Northern California.

NOTE:
Council Member Pat Eklund, MarinMOCA Co-Founder Sandi Miot, and

Executive Director Nancy Rehkopf are available for interviews.
