Event Description:
Fill your basket and warm your heart when you shop at Whole Foods Market in Marin County on Thursday, Jan. 11, during a Community Giving Day to support award-winning job training at Fresh Starts Culinary Academy in Novato.
All four Marin locations of Whole Foods Market – in Novato, Mill Valley, and San Rafael -- will designate 5 percent of net sales on Jan. 11 to benefit the award-winning nonprofit program that offers hands-on training for up to 80 students yearly.
The intensive 10-week program is operated by Homeward Bound of Marin, the county’s chief provider of shelter and services for homeless families and adults. Students may be residents of Homeward Bound programs or applicants referred by other community agencies.
Founded in 2000, Fresh Starts Culinary Academy expanded in 2008 to a 3,000-square-foot training kitchen in Novato. Students have the opportunity to work in several social enterprise businesses: The Key Room event venue with on-site catering, Jackson Cafe at Whistlestop and in production of Wagster Treats dog biscuits, now sold in 100+ stores in California.
Last year, 85 percent of Fresh Starts graduates found employment within 30 days of completing the program. They work for employers like Genji Sushi, Safeway, Sausalito Yacht Club, Villa Marin, and restaurants like Sol Food and The Cheesecake Factory.
Revenue from the Community Giving Day will underwrite the expense of outfitting all students with uniforms, caps and a knife set awarded upon graduation, as well as the cost of high-quality instruction.
