The Marin Museum of Contemporary Art is pleased to present
Sandi Miot: The Medium is the Muse, a retrospective of work by Sandi Miot. Miot is a long time resident of Marin and has a studio at the Novato Arts Center. This exhibition - consisting of 17 years of work - is a visual look at her journey and explorations in the medium of encaustic. Although Miot considers herself a mixed media artist, enjoying the use of many varied mediums, her passion is wax which has led her on an exploration of both the wax medium and inspired her to explore her feelings about the world around her and her place in it.
Over the past 17 years Miot has created a varied and intriguing body of work consisting of over 15 different series of both paintings and sculpture on wood and paper. Each of the series are amazingly different from the other, yet united by their similar content and concerns. A few pieces from each of those series will be shown in this exhibit, culminating in a large installation of encaustic monotype and encaustic sculpture entitled Biome. This most recent work is influenced by aquatic biological communities and our vanishing coral reefs. It is an investigation into texture and color and is a testimony to the amazing, astounding variety of organisms on this planet.
