Bales Orthodontics Announces Halloween
Candy Buy Back and Donation to Blue Star Moms of Marin
(Novato, California) – In an effort to promote a safe and healthy Halloween for children, Bales Orthodontics will buy back the candy that young trick-or-treaters collect this year.
Candy may be brought to Bales Orthodontics at 1713 Novato Blvd. on Tuesday November 1, 2016, between the hours of 8:30 and 5:00. Bales Orthodontics will pay $1.00 for each pound of Halloween treats collected. The candy will be donated to The Blue Star Moms of Marin who include the candy in care packages for our troops serving in combat zones and our wounded warriors recovering in Veterans’ hospitals. These packages are sent to our troops and veterans remind them that their sacrifice, hard work and service are not forgotten by those of us at home.
“Halloween is a fun holiday for kids of all ages,” said Dr. Tom Bales of Bales Orthodontics. “But too much candy can contribute to tooth decay. And for people who wear braces, eating sticky or chewy candies can harm their braces and may lengthen their orthodontic treatment.”
Dr. Katie Bales recommends that children who wear braces avoid such snacks as caramel, nuts, hard candies, licorice, taffy, jelly beans and bubblegum. She also advises patients to steer away from popcorn (especially unpopped kernels), hard pretzels and taco chips.
“Soft candies like chocolate or other melt-in-your-mouth varieties are acceptable in moderation,” she said. “In addition, regular brushing and flossing are essential parts of good dental care for everyone, but especially for those who wear braces.”
Parents should be aware that all children should have a check up with an orthodontist specialist no later than age 7. An orthodontist can spot subtle problems with emerging teeth and jaw growth, even while some baby teeth are still present. A check-up can reveal any current needs for treatment; inform parents that treatment may not be needed. Dr. Bales encourages parents to take the time to obtain a complimentary exam for their children so that if treatment is needed, their child can receive the appropriate treatment at the appropriate time.
During October, which is National Orthodontic Health Month, Dr. Bales’ office is conducting a wide range of activities to educate the public and their patients about protecting their teeth during Halloween, and to share information about the benefits of orthodontic treatment. This is the 30th anniversary of Dr. Bales’candy buy-back.
