Meditation Room – Marin Oaks
In the world of the 24-hour news cycle, bombarding social media and overwhelming home-life, students are struggling to place academics high on their priorities. Meditation is is an excellent modality for stress relief and clearing the mind. Scientific research shows that meditation may improve cognition and focus.

Many of Marin Oak’s student population face challenges in their academic careers. From varied stressful home-life situations, peer pressure, college entry, first-time jobs, today’s teenagers face more obstacles than ever before. The students of Marin Oaks now have an accessible outlet for their stress thanks to Team Pacheco of the Novato Chamber’s Leadership Program.
The project involved three steps 1) fundraising 2) design and 3) implementation. In the fundraising portion, Team Pacheco decided to involve the community; through GoFundMe and DonorsChoose Team Pacheco raised thousands of dollars AND helped Marin Oaks gain valuable exposure in the community for their progressive thinking and learning styles. The Rotary of Novato Sunrise stepped up to help out both financially and with volunteer labor. The design aspect of the program involved creating three designs and then showing them to the students at Marin Oaks. Students gave feedback and Team Pacheco used this feedback in the final design which was implemented in the purchasing and “renovation” phase; also a community-led effort. Thanks to the volunteers of groups like the Rotary of Novato Sunrise and the donations from groups like the Soroptimist of Novato and so many others the room has become a poster child for modern learning and community building.
One of the most unique and captivating parts of this room is the student contribution. Using canvasses and their emotions, students’ art hangs in the room; hopefully inspiring others and giving the students a sense of ownership over their space. Other schools in the area have been so impressed and intrigued by the positive effects of meditation on absences, discipline rates, and overall student focus. Together with the community and led by Team Pacheco of the Novato Leadership Program Class of 2018, Marin Oaks now has a new and improved Meditation Room.

If you are interested in celebrating the Opening of the improved Meditation Room with Team Pacheco, the Novato Chamber, and the community, join us for the Project Unveiling on May 3rd | 10:30 – 11:45 AM | Marin Oaks High | 720 Diablo Ave | Rm 10.  Hope to see you there! #LeadOnStong #LeadershipNovato #ShapingTomorrow
